September 21, 2021 - Vibrant beach life or secluded island bliss? Enjoy both, any time you wish, within a few hours of the USA. Beachfront and overwater villas blur indoor and outdoor living just a few feet from turquoise waters and incredible marine life at Six Senses Belize resort.
Here, you don’t just connect to nature, you’re immersed in it. “Feet in the sand” has evolved into an entire architectural concept, with villas incorporated into the pristine landscaping in such a way that they are protected and shaded in a casual yet refined way.
The resort and residences are set across two areas: the remote private island and nearby Secret Beach, just a five-minute boat ride away. This unique and inspired masterplan means guests and residents can experience both a total island escape and friendly beach nightlife, all in one day.
Set within a 4,448-acre (1,800-hectare) protected marine reserve, this tropical playground offers 28 acres (11.3 hectares) of world-class amenities between the Central American jungles and the Caribbean Sea and is just a short hop from much of the USA.
Just up the coast from bustling San Pedro on desirable Ambergris Caye, Secret Beach is home to the Longhouse, which exudes beach life with its easy-breezy atmosphere. There’s an Experience Center and dive center with a wide range of activities and watersports on offer. You’ll also find a boutique, café, deli, wine shop, outdoor Cinema Paradiso and overwater restaurant.
The Water Bar at the end of the jetty is a place to unwind with your favorite cocktail and some fresh and seasonal bites from the pizza oven and grill – flip flops are optional.
Secret Beach is also home to 24 residences, ranging from two-bedroom to seven-bedroom, available to purchase, with the front homes enjoying their own slice of Belize’s famous turquoise water.
Across the water from Secret Beach (a swim for the sporty), enjoy a total escape on the serene island. Here you can feel sensational at our Six Senses Spa, stretch it out at the Yoga Pavilion, spend a lazy afternoon at the All-Day Dining Village or sample freshly cooked seasonal catches at the BBQ Hut. Our chefs at our plant-forward Leaf restaurant will source as many ingredients from the land as they can accommodate, supplementing this with regional ingredients from local farmers.
Along the island’s Eastern and Western shores, there will be 45 one- and two-bedroom resort villas and a three-bedroom retreat villa, most of which will be overwater bungalows accessed by jetties. There is also a collection of three, four, and five-bedroom residences, available for purchase. Loosely dispersed along a central breezeway, they eliminate any sense of boundaries to form a barefoot sandy beach community while existing flora will protect privacy and shield the structures from each other.
Head to the South of the island for unspoiled horizon views and swim up and relax in the sunken loungers or nets suspended over the rippling water of the sunset bar.
The most sublime of all is the heart of the island, which is home to a mangrove reserve. Years of work studying this complex ecosystem has determined how best to support its natural growth. It is home to a large variety of fish, crab, shrimp, and mollusk and natural foraging habitat for birdlife. It also serves as a nursery for many fish species including coral reef fish. The dense root system traps sediment flowing down rivers and off the land, stabilizing the coastline and preventing weather erosion. By filtering out this sediment, it protects coral reefs and seagrass meadows.
Six Senses Belize is the result of a design collaboration between architects Studio Caban, interior design house Maed Collective, landscape designer Maat Handasa, and sustainability experts XCO2.
Renewable wood is the principal material used in the facades and buildings are modular and prefabricated to keep on-site construction to a minimum. The choice of materials and interior finishes is inspired by an understanding of the cultural and natural local resources, exuding a contemporary and casual island vibe. The natural vegetation along the beach zone will be left intact, preserving this natural barrier that also serves as a natural roosting and foraging habitat for birdlife.
