Working closely with local NGOs, partners, families, and the communities we are part of, means our support goes where it’s most needed. Whether we’re replanting a forest, conserving vulnerable wildlife, or providing infrastructure with renewable energy, our collaborative relationships take the idea of sustainability one step further towards a more reciprocal relationship with our local communities, wildlife, and landscapes.
After all, thriving, lively, and sustainable communities reach their full potential when they share humanity, vision, and aspiration. To support local projects on the ground, each resort allocates a Sustainability Fund comprising 0.5 percent of total hotel revenue coming directly from your bookings that goes towards meaningful and measurable initiatives.
In 2009, a devastating forest fire ripped through a densely wooded section in Sant Joan, our neighborhood municipality, destroying 34 hectares of native forest. To combat the impact, our team at Six Senses Ibiza are helping to replant the area, supporting a multi-year program with Regenera Natura, an environmental project working in harmony with nature to provide a sustainable solution to forest management across the island.
On a bright sunny day this spring, our team pulled on wellies, grabbed their spades, and began the task of putting down new roots, which involved clearing, repopulating, and creating firefighting strips. Over the next two years, we’ll support the replanting of 8 hectares of land with over 4,000 endemic trees of a variety of species in Xarraca Bay.
The project goes far beyond planting trees to include analyzing and studying various biodiversity indicators such as soil quality, as well as taking an inventory of plants and wildlife to measure the evolution and impact of our actions.
Preserving the island’s natural heritage, reducing and balancing temperatures, and supporting biodiversity are the key priorities for this forestry action project. As Marta Cardoso, Regional Sustainability Director at Six Senses, explains, “Seeing first-hand the progress and impact of this project is really gratifying for the team, and it has allowed us to convey the importance of taking care of our forests as a vital ecosystem in Ibiza.”
Cows are considered sacred animals across India. At Six Senses Vana just outside Dehradun in the foothills of the mighty Himalayan Mountain range, we’ve partnered with Hari Om Ashram, an NGO caring for over 1,000 rescued cows, to improve their living conditions and offer high standards of expert veterinary care.
The project takes a two-hoofed approach. Firstly, we helped convert a cow shelter to run on 100 percent renewable energy by installing 14 solar panels generating 7.5KW, 10 batteries, and 12 LED lights. By providing a clean and sustainable source of electricity, not only does the shelter create a safer and more comfortable space for the cows, a solar-powered water pump also provides a consistent supply of fresh water, further improving conditions for the herd.
Secondly, the project ensures regular veterinary support through medicine supplies and weekly checkups by a qualified veterinarian, ensuring the health and well-being of the cows. Furthermore, improved infrastructure such as new paving helps with better hygiene and rainwater harvesting ensures continued water security for the bovine residents.
This project aims to significantly enhance the lives of these sacred animals by providing them with a more comfortable, healthy, and sustainable environment. As Philippa Roe, Group Manager of Regenerative Impact, explains, “The energy-saving initiatives at the cow shelter are a great example of taking Six Senses practices into the community, and will create a lasting positive impact for both the animals and environment.”
On the beautiful shores of Vietnam’s Con Dao Island, Six Senses Con Dao welcomed the start of the turtle nesting season on March 27 with a mama green turtle laying a precious clutch of 92 eggs.
These future ocean adventurers are now safeguarded within the resort’s “Let’s Get Cracking” incubation site, in collaboration with the Con Dao National Park Authority. Here, a dedicated team will care for them until their anticipated hatching in approximately 60 days.
With a hatching rate of above 90 percent, the success story of Six Senses Con Dao’s turtle conservation efforts is a testament to the positive impact of sustainable tourism practices. While we acknowledge the value of natural processes, the low hatching and survival rates, due to a number of factors including flooding, poaching, and predation, mean we take extra steps to safeguard them by relocating the nests to our protected incubation location. Since 2018, we have collaborated with the Con Dao National Park Authority to release close to 27,000 baby turtles into the ocean, making a significant contribution to the preservation of this Endangered species
Guests visiting Six Senses Con Dao from May to December have the unique opportunity to witness the extraordinary spectacle of baby turtles being safely released into the ocean on the resort’s private beach.
At Six Senses Ninh Van Bay in Vietnam, some of our most important guests are the Black-Shanked Douc Langur monkeys. We’re delighted that our efforts to conserve and protect this elusive creature are resulting in growing numbers yearly. In 2023, the troop welcomed 13 new babies.
Included in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and Vietnam’s Red Book, the Black-Shanked Douc Langur is only found in parts of southern Vietnam and eastern Cambodia. The mighty Hon Heo Mountain behind our resort is one of the rare habitats that the monkeys call home, relying on the reservoir for fresh water during dry season.
Since 2020, we have collaborated with a local NGO, Green Viet, whose biologists identified 109 individuals around the resort, which grew to 157 in 2022 and to 170 in 2023. In that time, the team has identified 21 plants on which langur feed, enabling us to ensure preservation of their delicate habitat.
Naturally shy, it is a rare privilege to encounter langurs and we arrange guided hikes into the hills with our resident biologist where you can encounter the monkeys and learn about forest life. To further support our playful neighbors, the proceeds from sales of our soft toy monkey mascot are donated to our Sustainability Fund which directly contributes to local langur conservation.
Guest bookings and soft toy mascot sales contribute directly to a dedicated Sustainability Fund at every resort. This helps us provide investment in projects that benefit local communities and environments in a real and tangible fashion. Read more about our sustainable actions and impacts.
